Weather Where They Are Privacy Policy

Updated November 2015

Osmium USA takes the privacy of our users very seriously. As such, it is important to know what data we keep and how we use it. Complete transparency is important in gaining the trust of users in handling their personal data.

Almost every interaction you have with the app will require some kind of interaction with our servers. The data sent to our servers almost always has location data attached, as Weather Where They Are is very location sensitive. Occasionally, data is sent to Google for geocoding. Once your coarse location (defined by Android as “accuracy approximately equivalent to a city block”) is generalized to a city, it is then sent to OpenWeatherMap to get the weather conditions for that city. Our API will only return the generalized city, not exact coordinates, of your location. Not even behind the scenes do other people’s phones know exactly where you are.

The only location data we actively store is where you are currently (these are your coarse coordinates as defined above) which is updated every 30 minutes. These are only used for the purpose of generalizing the city you are in (using Google’s Geocoding API). We do not actively store your location history, nor do we keep track of where you go and when. The Weather Where They Are app proves you’re you with access tokens and, once that token expires, can not be related back to you or your device from server logs.

Here’s a consise list of what we save and why:
